Stability Pad Squat Test

Performance Testing · Dynamic Lower-Extremity Stability

The Stability-Pad Squat Test assesses dynamic lower-extremity stability capability.

Test Demonstration

The video shows the pad setup and squat repetitions. For an actual test, count perfect repetitions over the full 60 seconds as specified in the book; this short demonstration does not represent a complete timed trial.

Equipment

  • 2 stability pads
  • Stopwatch

Test Procedure

  1. Set two stability pads shoulder-width apart.
  2. Stand on both pads with the toes pointing forward.
  3. Distribute weight evenly through the feet and squat until the knees reach 90°.
  4. Extend the knees until standing erect.
  5. Perform as many perfect repetitions as possible within 60 seconds.
  6. Record the number of perfect repetitions completed.

Pre-Test Warm-Up

Scoring

Dynamic Stability Proficiency: DS = repetitions ÷ 60 seconds.

The source uses this test to indicate how well an athlete can maintain balance during an unstable movement.

Test Note

If a correct squat cannot be performed with the pads shoulder-width apart, increase the distance between the pads until the squat can be performed correctly.

If the Test Shows a Deficiency

Use the result to select an appropriate progression for lower-body stability, then retest under the same setup. Begin with the bodyweight squat and bilateral squat movement patterns as applicable. The book lists resistance work such as front squat and overhead squat in the related exercise progressions; choose load and difficulty according to technique and training history. The stability pad squat is the directly related exercise. A test result does not diagnose an injury or guarantee that one exercise will resolve the limiting factor.
