Single Leg Stability Test

Chapter 4 · Fitness Assessment · 4.23

Assesses lower-body control over a planted leg during repeated single-leg squats.

Test Demonstration

Watch the movement, then follow the book’s full procedure and measurement instructions for a formal assessment.

Equipment

Open floor space and an observer who can note movement compensations.

Test Procedure

Perform ten single-leg squats to approximately 45° while keeping the arms at the sides. Observe knee tracking, pelvic level and torso position as the repetitions continue.

Result and Scoring

The book describes a pass when knee, hip and torso remain controlled; note inward knee motion, opposite hip drop, excessive forward lean or knee movement beyond the toes as deficiencies.

Video Demonstration Note

The video shows single-leg squat repetitions with the arms reaching forward. The book specifies arms at the sides, so this is a modified demonstration and must not be scored as an exact protocol.

Training Connections

The book recommends targeted hip-abduction work, Romanian Deadlift and Supine Knee to Chest according to observed deficits. Browse the exercise library for related demonstrations.
