A Chapter 6 tennis conditioning exercise with a video demonstration and technique cues.

Exercise Video

The video shows the complete movement with a compact demonstration.

How to Perform the Exercise

Stand on an elastic band and hold it in the hand on the same side. Begin with the arm close to the body and thumb turned inward. Raise the arm out to shoulder height while rotating the thumb forward, then lower slowly.

Technique Cue

Stop at about 90 degrees of shoulder abduction and show the thumb-position change rather than lifting higher.

Book Technique and Progression

Book difficulty: 1 (the book’s exercise rating). Check the prerequisites and use loading suited to your technique and training history.

Raise the arm to shoulder height as the thumb rotates from inward to forward, then lower under control. The book flags an unchanged thumb position or lifting beyond 90 degrees as errors.
